WHY TRUMP’S VERDICT IS A BAD OMEN FOR AMERICA

In corrupt countries, it is a common practice for politicians in power to lock up, or even kill, their opponents.

Russia notoriously is known for their brutal use of the legal system to squash any dissent. Many opposition members have lost their lives behind bars, including most recently Alexei Navalny.

In countries like Brazil, Bolsonaro is still fighting for his freedoms and right to run for president again. Lula, the current president, has gone after him and all his supporters wielding the power of their corrupt legal system to squash any uprising.

China is another example where the legal system is weaponized to silence dissent. The Chinese government has a history of imprisoning political dissidents, with prominent figures like Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, who died in custody, symbolizing the regime's ruthless approach.

Turkey, under President Erdoğan, has seen a dramatic increase in the use of the judiciary to crack down on political opponents and journalists. The aftermath of the failed 2016 coup attempt led to mass arrests and purges, highlighting the regime's grip on power through legal intimidation.

Venezuela's government, under Nicolás Maduro, frequently uses the courts to imprison opposition leaders, further destabilizing the country.

The term “Banana republic,” usually reserved for corrupt and unstable countries, has been bantered around recently to describe how far the mighty US has fallen. Examples include Guatemala and Honduras, where political figures use their power to imprison rivals and suppress dissent.

Now, it seems the US is joining the ranks. The Democrats have gone after Trump, leading to a guilty verdict on 34 counts.

But this isn't for war crimes, spying on Americans, embezzlement, or murder.

No, Billionaire Trump got convicted for misclassifying a $130,000 payment to a porn star for signing an NDA.

This kind of petty political maneuvering is what you'd expect from a Russia, not the world's leading democracy.

I agree that this seems like not that big of a deal, but the difference is Trump has done a bunch of stuff that he should be prosecuted for. I’m not gonna feel bad for him when he tried to overthrow an election. That’s the trial we need.

I fail to see anything improper about the trial or the way it was conducted. Trump got a chance to give a full defense of himself and his conduct, with 12 jurors that he and his legal team had input into selecting, including multiple jurors who got news from sources like Truth Social or Fox. Trump's legal team was allowed to call any witnesses they wanted, including Trump. They made their case fully and completely. And they lost, fair and square. If you think somehow the evil puppet master Biden orchestrated this entire outcome, you don't really understand how the judicial system works, nor how state vs federal government works. All these foul calls by the GOP after the verdict just amount to a bunch of crying because Trump finally faced consequences for doing crimes.

The first time I ever took a jury verdict, I almost passed out. I was a brand-new prosecutor, 29 years old, and had just given my first closing argument a few days earlier. Since then, the trial team and I had been whiling away our time, interrupted only by the occasional note from the jury seeking testimony or legal instructions as they deliberated. All of a sudden, we got word from the court clerk: Come on up, we have a verdict.

Let me tell you, there’s little in life that causes a burst of uncut adrenaline quite like the arrival of a verdict. I managed (barely) to hold it together as we performed the arcane, dramatic ritual that concludes every criminal trial. The judge brings the lawyers and the defendant back into the courtroom, the security officers take their places, the jury files in solemnly, and the judge asks: Ladies and gentlemen, have you reached a verdict? (Ummm, yes, Your Honor, that’s why we’re all back out here.) As I stood at the prosecution table while the jury took their places back in the box, I felt dizzy and had to use my arms to brace myself.

Moments before the jury read the verdict, my supervisor — a grizzled trial buzzsaw known for his blistering closing arguments — leaned over and whispered to me: “Whatever they say, no reaction. Don’t move a muscle.” I don’t know what I would’ve done if not for that last-second command. Maybe I would’ve been sensible enough not to react either way, but I’m not sure. I don't believe that the SCOTUS can rule on this state case. It will go through the NY Supreme Court to rule on the appeals, and I believe that the entire court is filled entirely with black female justices. Correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.
